Measure The Weight of Chinese History: The Middle Kingdom Civilization

About This Trip:

This tour offers student groups a comprehensive overview of China’s people, culture and politics across the country’s long history. We begin in the current Chinese capital, Beijing, home to historical monuments – including the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City – rich cultural traditions, and cutting-edge art and architecture. Xi’an, where Chinese civilization first arose and flourished for two millennia, takes us even deeper into the past. The imperial capital for several dynasties, Xi’an was also a vibrant center for East-West interaction, serving as the Silk Road’s eastern starting point. Nanjing, a capital for six imperial dynasties, offers a primer on more modern Chinese history. Finally, we visit Shanghai, the “Pearl of the Orient” and “Paris of the East,” representing China’s colonial past and economic future.
